Missing One Another

Getting tired of Zoom, Teams and every other virtual meeting platform yet? Me too, but not because they aren’t great tools for conducting business and seeing friends and family. These meetings are driving me crazy because I miss our traditional Lunch and Learns, Percolate AMs, B.I.G.s, ribbon cuttings, ground-breakings and every other event where I get to see your smiling faces in person.

Erring on the side of caution is a short-term sacrifice we must make as business connections, neighbors, and friends. Grimes Chamber & Economic Development has made some very difficult decisions during this time including postponing the eXpo and cancelling Governor’s Days. These decisions are not made in haste and come from numerous discussions between chamber staff, board members, committee co-chairs and City officials.

Not only are these events great marketing and networking opportunities for GCED members but are also a platform for charitable organizations to raise money and awareness for their causes. Although these physical events are not able to take place, we can still do our part as a community to show support for local businesses and non-profits. It has been so encouraging to see examples of this support in Grimes. I have seen people making masks in exchange for food pantry donations, purchasing restaurant gift cards, paying full price at businesses when services are not what they typically provide and there are so many more. It is clear the people of Grimes truly care and therefore will help our community come back stronger than ever.

With the ever-changing situation, we do not know exactly how long we will need to continue making these sacrifices. If you are able, here are a few things you can do to show your support in the community:

-First and foremost; Shop Local

-Purchase gift cards and patronize local restaurants and other affected businesses

-Offer to pay full price even when discounts are given

-Support social media campaigns to generate more traction for a business

-Donate to local non-profits and maintain membership dues

One person doing any one of these may not seem like a big deal but together we can make sure our favorite organizations survive 2020. Be safe, be healthy and look out for one another. #LoveGrimes
